2014 New Years Resolution: Learn to Sew. :3

Hi everyone! So, we've made it through January. How are your resolutions coming?? Besides learning to use twitter, my resolution is to learn how to sew. I am having a blast learning. It's something I've always wanted to know. I hope you're ready for some story telling.

Growing up, I was (and still am) too tall and skinny for most regular clothes. In high school, the only store that catered to my long & thin torso was Hollister/Abercrombie (ughhh! come on!), so I would often have to buy shirts that were way too big (so that they were long enough). My twin sister had a sewing machine, but wouldn't let me use it and wouldn't teach me to sew. She used it as leverage >:) That little brat! I would do chores/favors for her and she would sew my shirts to fit me.

Fast forward many years....
~!~!~!~!~ WeeeEeEeooOoOooOo *time travel !`~!~!$!#%$#$^&

I began to get into making my own accessories, hair bows for cute outfits, and cosplay. My boyfriend's sweet mother said she had a sewing machine that I could have, but at the time, I was living in a small city apartment in Washington, DC. There was no room to craft and definitely no room for a sewing machine. *cry as sewing machine is so close, yet so far...*

Fast forward to Fall 2013...
I moved to Raleigh, NC where I now reside in a little home where I have a room for my crafts and sewing and photography! Yay!!! *happy dance* Life is so good!

However, shortly after moving, I got called away to work out of town on a television show (I work on film/TV crews as my big girl job). Just as I had the space to learn to sew, I no longer had the time... :(
The show ended right around Christmas and just in time for a New Years resolution:
2014 will be my year to become a badass sewing monster.

I am pretty much learning by reading the manual of my machine and watching YouTube videos. So far, so good. I am starting by just altering some existing pieces and making them better. If anyone has any sort of advice or any tips they want to offer me, I am very open to your suggestions! Please leave tips in the comments or on my Facebook page!

I started by altering a top from Romwe. When I ordered it, I had no idea how big it was going to be! I wanted it to be more form fitting.

I was pretty excited at the success of my first real alteration! It turned out perfect! I was able to use the sweater in my Christmas Daily Style post!

Yayyy! Since my first success, I was hooked. I had a few onesies (what kawaii kids sleep in when they can't afford kigurumis) that were long-sleeves & long pants. I prefer summer style, so I went after my onesies with some scissors. First, I took on my Batman pjs.

Yay!!! Now I can be Batman with free legs and free arms!! wheeee!!~ On to my next project: a cheetah  print footed onesie that was too short for me so I could never wear it. My legs are too long! It had just the cutest little print on the feet, so I hated to just chop them off. Instead, I made the onesie summer style and made booties from the feet! I lined the inside of the booties with the section of the leg I was no longer using and added a ribbon and bow to the top keep the booties up.

SOO cute! I love how the booties turned out!
Next project: Thrift store little boys' jacket transformed to cute vest for a big kid (me).
Secured the lining into the vest at the shoulder and hacked off the sleeves.

Yay! Such a good way to spend $2.50.
Next project: Boyfriend ordered a Carolina Panthers jacket from eBay for himself. It's a size XL and didn't fit him right so he was just going to donate it. I commandeered it and made it a project to fit me. This was without a doubt the toughest one yet. It is so thick and has many layers of fabric/lining/etc. Grabbed my new rotary cutter and just started chopping. One thing led to another, and now I have a new Panthers jacket.
:D :D :D
So, that's where I am with my resolution. Other than making these alterations to my clothes, I have also been making tons of bows to go with my outfits!!! Here are a few examples~
Solid Red Bow to go with my Snow White Kitty outfit:

Spooky Spider Bow two layer bow - black mesh spider fabric over solid white fabric:

My Carolina Panthers bow:

& my superhero bows:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm very happy with my progress so far!! I love to learn new things and this has been a fun and practical adventure so far. Follow me on Instagram (@alexapoletti) to keep up with my sewing progress along with all the other stuff I like to do! It is my goal to create a fancy garment from scratch by the end of the year. I am hoping it will be sooner (and at this rate, I think it will be) because I would like to start working on some new special cosplays!
Let me know how your resolutions are going & if you have any sewing tips or tricks for me in the comments below!!
Until next time~ xoxo
Cos Lenses: A Circle Lens Product Review - Ash, Super Crystal, and Nova Green on Light Green Eyes
Hi everyone!! Today I am bringing you a LONG OVERDUE review of fabulous Cos Lenses!
Cuties like yourself come to me all the time with questions about circle lenses for light eyes. I am no expert on the topic but I know where they are coming from in their confusion and curiosity. People with light eyes often have lots of trouble finding photos of circle lenses that aren't photographed on dark brown/black eyes. So, here I am.
When I got the chance to review Cos Lenses, I took this opportunity to search for the best green lenses for green eyes. Some of my most commonly worn lenses are lenses that match my eyes. You're probably wondering- why wear lenses that people can't even see? WRONG! I wear green lenses more frequently than any other color! I wear them for their enlarging effect and subtle designs that blend with my natural color far better than any dark lenses. Circle lenses that match your eyes are great for every day life or for first timers that are worried about looking "alien-like" with huge lenses and a shocking color contrast. So, for all of those reasons, I bring you this review.
Cos Lenses has recently redesigned their website and now sorting through so many circle lenses is a breeze! I love the new site, Cos Lenses!~
For my selection of lenses from Cos Lenses, I wanted to get lenses that were a brand I've never tried (I.Fairy), in their largest diameter offered (16.2mm), had cool designs, and that were green. This led me to my top three choices: Nova, Ash, and Super Crystal all in green.
The lenses came in two cute pink boxes (one box contained two pairs and the other had one pair).
All the vials were securely wrapped in bubble wrap and made it safely to my door.
I think it's time to get started on the individual reviews! Starting with...
(stock image of lens from Cos Lenses product page)
I chose Ash in green because I thought it was a pretty safe choice for a Dolly Eye look. It has all of the key things to look for in doll eye circle lenses: thick black outer ring, bright color, and 16.2mm size. Dolly eye lenses are my favorite types of circle lenses. I'm not sure if this is because I like being an anime queen or if it's just what I'm used to, but I am drawn to that basic design.
The lens looks just like the stock photo. The color is a bit darker than my crappy cell phone pic of it ^ but it's a lovely color! The color is actually extremely accurate in the stock image.
Let's put them on and use a better camera, shall we?
(My lashes are Dolluxe. Always.)
Oh my godddd! They are soooo pretty!!!
\
They are so sweet!!!
Overall Rating
Design~ 5/5
I love this design. It is very dolly with it's black outer ring and thick green coloring. I like that the design feathers in a bit instead of an abrupt transition like the Dolly+ series (although I am a huge supporter of the Dolly+ series).
Color~ 5/5
I love the deep, dark green of these circles. They are a little dark for my eye color, but I actually quite like the effect of the darker green outer bit and light green inside. It makes them look even more dolly... Almost glass-like. In a good way.
Enlargement~ 5/5
Huge! All of these lenses are listed at 16.2mm on their respective product pages, though I'm not really sure if I can see a noticeable difference between the usual 15mm and the larger 16.2mm. Either way, they are huge.
Comfort~ 5/5
Pleasantly surprised! I can barely notice them. They fit my eyes well. I am always skeptical when trying new brands for the first time, but I will definitely be willing to try more I.Fairy lenses.
 Naturalness~ 3/5
I am giving them a point for being green like my eyes, but otherwise, they are not very natural. Quite large. But again, naturalness is category that I rarely strive to get a 5/5.
& I've also used these lenses in this Daily Style post~
Time to check out I.Fairy Super Crystal in Green!
To be completely honest and upfront, the Super Crystal pair is my least favorite of the group of green lenses that I got. Here's why:
These lenses are very pretty. To say they are my least favorite does not mean that I don't like them, it just means I liked the other two better. The reason I don't like them as much is because it doesn't look like the stock image which looks like... wait for it... a crystal. I picture the stock image on my eye and it seems like it would be glossy and dimensional and intriguing. The overall design is the same, but the green color is VERY different and the design itself is quite pixelated, as you can see in the photo above.
I told you that they were still pretty! ;D
Overall Rating
Design~ 3/5
As I mentioned above, the design of the Super Crystal lenses is very pixelated when you look at them up close. They look fine from far away, but people aren't always far away, ya know? A little disappointed but nothing that would stop me from wearing these, because I still think they are very pretty lenses.
Color~ 2/5
The color is the main thing I want people to know about these lenses. Most people pick their circle lenses based on the color first and design second. The exact color of circle lenses is VERY important when choosing a lens, whether it's for a cosplay, to match your eyes, or just a specific color you've always dreamed your eyes were. While the actual color of these lenses is not a bad color at all (I actually like it), I feel that the stock photo is so misleading that I have to take off many points. The stock photo shows the lens as an olive color, and the actual lenses are a bright aqua blue-green.
Enlargement~ 5/5
Huge! All of these lenses are listed at 16.2mm on their product pages. Noticeable great enlargement!
Comfort~ 5/5
Very comfortable, as I've found all three of the I.Fairy lenses I've tried to be! I have to divulge a little secret... And I am embarrassed and I DO NOT CONDONE THIS~ I brought these lenses with me while traveling (because while this review seems to slam them, I really do like them), and I guess I didn't close the case all the way and the contact solution leaked out ;o; A few days later when I went to wear them, they looked like shriveled little pieces of colored rocks. *cry* I've never mistreated a pair of contact lenses like this, so I was hoping and hoping I could restore them!!! I filled their contact case up with new solution and hoped for the best. I closed their case and left them overnight. The next day, I nervously opened the case... and they were as good as new!!! They completely repaired themselves to their size and shape like nothing had ever happened!! I feared when I put them in that they would sting or that maybe they had torn in the process, but nope! They felt and still feel perfect.
***I am not a doctor and it's probably bad for you to do this and then wear the lenses like nothing happened, so don't take it from me. Shhh!!! Annnnnyway, moving on...
 Naturalness~ 3/5
Because they don't have a dark outer ring, they are more natural than dolly lenses, but their huge size, unnatural green shade, and lack of blending to natural eye color, make them pretty unnatural looking. But who likes natural looking anyway?
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
(stock image of lens from Cos Lenses product page)
How cool is the design of the Nova series?? I love that it has clear patches to let your natural color show through. It almost looks like an abstract art piece! I imagine someone taking a paintbrush and flinging it at a canvas, and they come out with something that looks like the I.Fairy Nova series. XD hehehehe :p
It comes in this cute I.Fairy glass vial :3
I really love the design of the Nova series, but again, the stock image seems to be a little off. No where near as extreme as the Super Crystal green photo, but the stock photo looks a little more of a blue-green than the actual bright green color of the lens. This one is a really minor hue adjustment and not something I would sweat at all.
Ohhh these are just SO PRETTY!!!
Ummmm... I LOVE THESE NOVA LENSES.
Overall Rating
Design~ 5/5
I love the Nova design! As I said above, it feels like an art piece! The thinner black outer ring helps make your eyes appear larger without making them look TOO dolly (like a thicker outer ring would). My personal favorite part about these lenses is that they highlight your natural eye color by having the clear patches, which also helps these lenses blend with your eye. They actually blend SO well with my eye that the design is even a little hard to see! Hahaha... I guess I found what I was looking for! Enlarging but blend seamlessly with my natural green eyes. I am curious what the Nova lenses would look like in other colors that don't match my eyes... *hmm*
Color~ 4/5
I am deducting a point from the color category because I feel the stock image doesn't perfectly reflect the actual color of the lens. That being said, it's pretty dang close, so it still gets a 4/5. ;D
Enlargement~ 5/5
Huge! Big! Large! 16.2mm!
Comfort~ 5/5
They are almost too comfortable.
 Naturalness~ 4/5
The design is a fairly unnatural one with the swipe effect and black outer ring, but the design draws in your natural color and helps to blend it so nicely that it is far more natural looking than many of the lenses I've tried.
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
4hime.com Product Review: Lucas VII Fashion Studded Flat Sneakers
Hi guys! WOW! It's been a long time since I've done a product review! & trust me... there are lots more coming! I'm definitely ready to get back into doing product reviews. I love trying new products and clothing so I can bring you the latest and greatest! Please make sure you check back for lots of upcoming reviews on circle lenses, bags, and more! But today, we are reviewing my favorite thing ever... SHOES!
4hime.com is a has all kinds of great things, but mostly they have awesome clothes, shoes, Japanese nail sets, and circle lenses! Of course, the first thing I was drawn to was their shoe section. I have such a weakness for shoes!! Ugh! *melt* Due to 4hime being a new shop and with the changing of the season (switching out styles), their shoe section is fairly small but that doesn't mean you can't find a pair you love on there. I picked this pair to review before I even looked at the rest of their site! I knew I had to have them!
4hime is based in California which is sooo good!!! Finding stores that carry Japanese & Korean brands/styles in America can be really hard. The thing I like best about 4hime being USA based is that shipping is SOOOO FAST. I literally got this pair of shoes 2 or 3 days after I put in the order. Can't beat it!
They were shipped in the shoe box they come in, which I thought was really cute! I like the box :3 I am a sucker for colorful packages! I also like that you can verify it's the right thing without even opening the box because of the label on the side of the box.
Their sizes are in US sizes. *thumbs up*
Something to note: I usually wear a US size 8 or 8.5. Most times, I order shoes a size too big so I can fill them with fluffy insoles and basically always walk on clouds. These shoes seem to run small. They fit me nicely as is without add'l comfort insoles and seem to be closer to a size 8 shoe. Glad I sized up!
Once I opened up the box, I found my invoice nicely tucked into the box and the shoes wrapped up nicely as well. You guys have no idea how much self control it takes to take a photo of the packaging as I open it instead of just tearing it to shreds to get to my shiny new shooooes.
Finally, the moment has come~
omggggg ♡♡♡♡
They are everything I hoped they would be!
Let's take a look!
I LOVE them! Breakdown timeeee!~
They have zippers on the inside so you can easily slip your foot in without untying the shoe, as well as a decorative zipper on the outside.
The alternating silver and gold studs are really a selling point for me. I personally love anything that you can wear with silver OR gold jewelry.
Gold eyelets.... Yesssszszszssssz ♡
IT'S TIME FOR THE BEST PART! TIME TO WEAR THEM!!!
I am so happy! I love these shoes!
As far as quality, they are about what you would expect from a $30 pair of shoes. They are made for fashion, not for sport. The bottom is flat (as expected from the name of the shoe) like Chuck Taylors, and the sides of the shoes are on the thinner side (good for summer!). I haven't had them long enough to tell you about their durability, but I think as long as they aren't your every-single-day-never-take-them-off-ever shoes, then you should fine. They look great. The studs seem to be attached very securely and all the zippers work correctly. Did I mention they are only $30?!
♡♡♡♡♡♡
I used these shoes from 4hime in my latest Daily Style post! I think these shoes were just what that outfit needed for a little extra touch of style and sass. :D See the outfit post & link list here
What do you think? Are you a shoe junkie like me??? Hehehe... I love shoes. I love sneakers. I love black. I love gold. I love studs and zippers. I am so happy! It's like these were made for me. ♡
Find these shoes here:
Until next time, be stylish, be cool, & have fun!
xoxo
